Samoa Joe assesses his future in the squared circle.

Two weeks ago, Homicide wrapped up his 30-year in-ring career with a tag team victory over Afa Jr. and Mike Santana. During a recent appearance on Insight With Chris Van Vliet, his close friend and former AEW World Champion Samoa Joe pondered the potential end of his own career, which he believes could come sooner rather than later.

“I think a lot of people from my generation, from what I’ve seen, if they have the ability, we’ve done our best to kind of save up and we definitely don’t want to out stay our welcome, because we may have been privy to a few people may have done that in their careers,” Samoa Joe said. “So I definitely don’t want to be that guy in mind.”

Samoa Joe believes the end is closer than it seems

Joe was asked if he had a specific date in mind for a possible retirement start. He suggested that he is keeping his options open, but also joked that it could just be a case where he re-evaluates things at the end of his current contract.

“I think it’s just really based on when my contract runs out,” he said, “exploring those options as they go. I hate just saying ‘retirement,’ because how many pro wrestling retirements never stick? All of them. So yeah, I will do this for a little longer. And then yeah, I think the end is probably sooner than any new deal being signed.”

Samoa Joe made his professional wrestling debut in 1999. From there, he built a name for himself across Ring of Honor, TNA Wrestling, and WWE before landing in All Elite Wrestling (and returning to ROH) in 2022. Since signing with AEW, he won the AEW World Championship and held it for 113 days.
