Jorge Sampaoli explains the reasons for his departure from OM in an interview with L’Equipe this Wednesday.

Jorge Sampaoli wanted an OM team capable of fighting for the championship title with PSG. This is why he left the club in July 2022, as he admitted in the columns of the newspaper L’Equipe today.

Need a more ambitious project

“In March 2021, I arrived at the club in a climate of crisis, with La Commanderie burned down, a coach gone, an eleventh place in the championship,” he resituates. “ We took the first step, we qualified OM in the Europa League, then we finished vice-champions behind Paris. For me, the next project had to be much more ambitious. I wanted Marseille to win the championship. »

If he denies having wanted to recruit stars like Antoine Griezmann, he deplores a gap between his ambitions and those of the Marseille hierarchy. “I didn’t want to return to the bench to be the vice-champion of PSG again, my level of motivation is not that”he adds. “Playing to be second frustrates me, and it may be unattainable, but I wanted to aim higher. I want to win a European Cup, win titles. »
