Sandro Tonali moving to Newcastle United sent shockwaves through Italian football.
Pretty much unheard of for one of their homegrown very best rising young stars to leave Serie A at such a young age.
It wasn’t just AC Milan fans who were stunned and angry, football fans across Italy were united.
Now 15 months later and Sandro Tonali making such a high quality return to the national team in the four matches these past six weeks, it has reopened the wound.
Carlo Pellegatti is a longstanding renowned and influential journalist, who specialises in covering AC Milan, as well as being a lifelong fan.
Following another two wins for Italy this past week or so, with Sandro Tonali so influential, Carlo Pellegatti on his personal YouTube channel has returned to the subject of the midfielder who chose Newcastle United over AC Milan and Serie A:
“Sandro Tonali is the great regret of the Milanisti.
“They (AC Milan fans) all think of it as an old heart that will sooner or later return.
“They asked me once again…
“Is Sandro Tonali back?
“The same question they often ask me.
“It’s incredible.
“I would bet that sooner or later Sandro Tonali will return to Milan, but I don’t know when.
“In my opinion, Sandro Tonali’s next transfer will be from Newcastle to Milan, I’m sure.”
Maybe one day Sandro Tonali will return to AC Milan.
However, I have no doubt that even if he does, it won’t be for a very long time.
Sandro Tonali can be at the heart of a very progressive Newcastle United as we move forward.
The Italy midfielder has also made clear how grateful he is for the support shown by Newcastle United and the fans this past year, as he dealt with his suspension.
I can’t see any way for the foreseeable, that Sandro Tonali will be wanting to leave Newcastle United, whether for AC Milan or anybody else.
The AC Milan journalist very much speaking like a fan, in hope, rather than any realistic expectation.
When it became clear in summer 2023 that Sandro Tonali was going to move to Newcastle United, it was Carlo Pellegatti who summed up the shocked reaction of AC Milan fans and in deed all Italian football fans, when speaking to TMW Radio about the Sandro Tonali transfer to Newcastle United:
“There is bewilderment.
“The news is true, Sandro Tonali is set to join Newcastle United.
“The problem is that we would like them [the AC Milan hierarchy] to explain the situation to us.
“Milan are about to lose a flag, in a June where you have already lost Ibrahimovic, Maldini and then also the shock of Berlusconi.
“It is an unexpected thing.
“Newcastle had already knocked on the door a month ago, things have evolved.
“There are those who say that Tonali is faltering [and wants a transfer], who must then speak to Milan who will then sit down at the negotiating table, others say that it is Milan who are pushing Tonali [to leave and generate a massive transfer fee].
“We have to understand this.”
