Sasheer Zamata Talks Becoming Agatha All Along’s Final Girl

Agatha All Along came to a close this week, and while the series largely focused on Agatha, Billy, and Rio, there was another key player: Sasheer Zamata’s potions expert Jen Kale. She begrudingly joins the antihero’s coven as they embark on the Witches Road which, if everything goes to plan, will have everyone get their deepest desires. And in Jen’s case, that means getting back the powers she lost a century ago.

In a spoiler-heavy interview with Collider, Zamata talked about the arc Jen goes through to reclaim her powers. In it, she discussed how she viewed Jen and Agatha’s dynamic, which is largely based in morality: Jen’s a “pretty righteous person” who likes being knowledgable and using that to help others. Even as she’s lost that spark when the show opens, Zamata said that’s reason enough for the two witches not vibe despite their similar situations. “It’s kind of a personality mismatch more than something happened between them,” Zamata told Collider.. “[Jen’s] a know-it-all who prides herself on being a do-gooder and healing people and helping people, it might irk Agatha, who doesn’t really help people.”

Still, power is power, and Jen would very much like hers back. When Agatha All Along is said and done, she ends the show having achieved her goal, and more importantly, alive. Of the scene where Jen accomplishes her dream, Zamata heaped praise on Kathryn Hahn and director Gandja Monteiro for letting it be her moment. “I’ve rarely been able to access that part of myself while performing, and I felt so lucky. […] To be able to finally get your power after 100 years feels like a lot. It feels like you’re rejoicing, but you’re also so sad because you haven’t [had it], like getting a friend back.”

Comics fans know Jen eventually becomes the Witch Woman, and is a cousin of original Ghost Rider Johnny Blaze. When asked about returning to the MCU, Zamata said she doesn’t know anything solid, but she if Jen could “find a new coven, [or] rededicate her life to healing people? I love playing [Jen] so, so much, and I think people really love seeing her actually get what she came for. I’d love to see her actually use the power that she regained.” And if not Marvel, she said she’s open to doing basically anything, from doing more action to going back to horror and continuing her final girl streak.

Agatha All Along is fully available over on Disney+.
