Scott McTominay waxed lyrical over Bruno Fernandes when asked about his former team-mate following a 2-1 defeat for Scotland in the UEFA Nations League.

The Scotland midfielder opened the scoring with a header after 7-minutes, which meant Portugal had a hill to climb to force a comeback.

Portugal came from behind thanks to goals from Bruno Fernandes and Cristiano Ronaldo. For the latter, it was his 901st career goal. An incredible record for the former United goalscorer.

Fernandes picked up a knock to his ankle during the game, but he downplayed fears in his post-match interview.

Speaking after the game, McTominay only had positive words for Fernandes.

He said (via TVI): “I played with Bruno for many years and he is an incredible player and person. He helped me a lot in my career.

“I am very grateful to him. I wish him every success.”

McTominay is another former United player with an eye for a goal. His exit, confirmed a week ago, will see him represent Serie A outfit Napoli for the foreseeable future.

With 10 goals in his last 17 appearances for Scotland, the 27-year-old continues to step up for his country, but they will still be disappointed after losing their last two games to Poland and now Portugal.
