Scott Speedman opened up about his experience playing Dr. Nick Marsh, Ellen Pompeo‘s onscreen love interest, on Grey’s Anatomy.

The actor made his debut on the show with a single episode back in Season 14. However, a few seasons later, he was brought back as a main character. After becoming a recurring cast member for the 20th season, he’s back again for Season 21.

In a new interview, he weighed in on being kept around for so long, what he’s learned from the show and what fans can expect from him in the new season.

He also spilled on what it’s like working with Ellen and the relationship that their characters share.

Scott told The Hollywood Reporter that he was “totally surprised” to have had such a long-running role on the show.

“I was just remembering the other day that I actually came on in season 14 just for one episode and then came back in season 18 [as a series regular for that season]. I like doing some of the smaller, more independent-driven things. Those are really near and dear to my heart. But I really have to say that I’ve loved doing Grey’s Anatomy,” he said. “It’s been really fun. I’m surprised how much I’ve enjoyed it, to be honest.”

He added that being on the show has taught him about how to “be flexible” on set, explaining, “Usually, when you’re on a show, you dictate certain things. On Grey’s, you’re kind of a hired gun where you can come in and just sort of drop into another world. That’s been great for me flexibility-wise, too, as an actor.”

How many episodes will feature him in the new season? Scott said that he wasn’t totally sure but confirmed that it would be “at least five episodes.”

He also commented on working with Ellen, saying that they “talk about everything.”

“She’s obviously a great person to talk to about all sorts of things, inside and outside the show, so it’s been great getting to know her and doing all that with her. But it’s incredible talking to someone that started a show [in 2005], and then 21 seasons later, we’re still talking about it,” he said.

Scott said that the relationship between his character and Ellen‘s Meredith Grey is at a “sort of plateau” at this point.

Does he think they’ll go the distance? He wasn’t sure.

“Oh, gosh. Honestly, I don’t know, especially with this show. Over my career, [I’ve learned that] showrunners have such a tough job. Things are ever-moving and ever-changing, and the needs of what’s going to make a show work are ever-changing, so you can’t get too tied to something. I think we’re in a good spot now. If the show continued for seasons to come, there would probably be rockier parts of it, and it would be a rollercoaster to see where that relationship goes,” he opined.
