Selena Gomez Reflects on Being Seen as a Victim & Her Role in Hollywood

Selena Gomez is hitting back at the perception that she is a victim.

In a recent interview, the 32-year-old actress reflected on the release of her 2022 documentary My Mind & Me. In it, she opened up about being diagnosed with bipolar disorder and other professional and personal struggles.

While she described the project as a chance to explain her life to fans and respond to certain headlines, Selena hit back on being victimized and revealed how her life has changed since then.

“I was very happy to share my story, but I want to make it crystal clear that that was a capsule of a time in my life and I truly believe I won’t be there again because I am properly medicated and I’m seeing people and I’m taking care of myself,” Selena told The Hollywood Reporter.

She added that “it genuinely is such a strong thing to be vulnerable.”

“It was terrifying for me to let people inside my world that way, but I was doing it because I felt like maybe this would help someone, and that’s what I care about. I just wanted people to feel less alone, and I wanted people to understand, ‘Oh, she was literally going through a really hard time, that’s why she canceled those two tours. But that’s really cool that she wants to help other people,’” she said, adding that some people “completely misunderstood” the goal of the movie.

“Not everyone, just a group of people, and they love to label me as this victim. And it’s funny because the things that I walked through, I fully believe I’m one of the strongest people that I have ever known. So, yeah, that always just bothers me,” she said.

Elsewhere in the interview, Selena was asked about the roles that she tends to get in Hollywood, saying that she is often displayed as being “more soft-spoken and the underdog character.”
