The Senator representing Osun East Senatorial District, Adenigba Fadahunsi, has called on federal and state governments to invest in large-scale rice farming as a strategic measure to strengthen the naira.
Speaking in Ilase-Ijesa during the presentation of 3,000 bags of rice to various groups from the 10 local government areas within the senatorial district, Fadahunsi emphasised the importance of local rice production in reducing the nation’s dependency on imports.
“Rice has become a staple on the country’s menu, and its high demand makes it essential for governments at all levels to ensure its availability at affordable prices,” Fadahunsi stated.
He continued, “The amount of foreign exchange spent annually on rice importation is enormous. If we can cultivate large quantities of this essential food locally, we can reduce the strain on forex and stabilise the naira. I urge the federal and state governments to act urgently in this regard.”
The senator highlighted the potential impact of local rice production on the economy, noting that it could mitigate further depreciation of the naira while ensuring food security.
Addressing attendees at the event, Fadahunsi encouraged constituents to remain hopeful for better days in 2025, urging them to pray for the progress of Osun State and Nigeria.
A statement released by his media adviser, Sam Segun-Progress, noted that the event coincided with a courtesy visit by the leadership of market women in the senatorial district.
“At the event, the senator distributed over 3,000 bags of rice to beneficiaries, including traditional rulers, religious leaders, political leaders, and market women, for onward distribution to their communities,” the statement read.
Fadahunsi’s gesture drew commendation from attendees, who lauded his efforts to alleviate hunger and advocate for sustainable solutions to Nigeria’s economic challenges.
