Former Ajax Amsterdam hopeful, Sergiño Dest left the Dutch club to join FC Barcelona in 2020. Under Xavi’s orders the following year, the American right-back did not fully live the experience he had. dreamed so much. Between the injuries and the Spanish technician’s instructions that were difficult to assimilate, Dest’s move to Barça turned into a nightmare. In an interview published by Sportthis Sunday, the 23-year-old player returned to his collaboration with the former emblematic Spanish midfielder.
“I wouldn’t say I have any regrets, because ultimately it was something that wasn’t up to me, but I think I didn’t have the necessary opportunities with Xavi. I felt that I had to play with limits, that I was not myself. I wanted to participate in the attack, because it is my greatest strength, but he asked me not to go up. (…) I don’t think he was honest with me. We had several conversations in which he told me something and I doubted whether it was really true. In the summer, before going on vacation, he told me: ‘I’m counting on you, don’t read the press’. And as soon as I came back, he told me ‘you have to leave“, explained Dest, who was subsequently loaned to AC Milan and PSV Eindhoven, before joining the Dutch club permanently.
