As part of the 26th day of Serie A, Sassuolo, seventeenth at kick-off, hosted Empoli, sixteenth, in a bottom-of-the-table position. Unable to win since January 6 (4 defeats, 1 draw), the Neroverdi were keen to get back on the path to victory and thus give themselves a little breathing space. On a much more virtuous dynamic, the Azzurri, with 3 draws and 2 victories in the last 5 matches, hoped, for their part, to continue their momentum. And the positive spiral of visitors would be confirmed. From the first moments of this meeting, Sebastiano Luperto found the fault and allowed his team to take the advantage (0-1, 11th).

An opposition which however remained balanced where each team surrendered blow for blow. Finally, Andrea Pinamonti took advantage of a penalty to equalize (1-1, 54th). Determined to pocket the three points, Davide Nicola made a change, deciding to launch M’Baye Niang (55th). Coaching paid off since the former Stade Rennais scorer gave Empoli the lead again from the penalty spot shortly after the hour mark (1-2, 64th). A short-lived joy because, in the process, Gian Marco Ferrari in turn found the fault (2-2, 77th) after intervention by the VAR. In the final seconds, Simone Bastoni finally put on the hero’s costume to give Empoli victory (2-3, 90+4th). In the ranking, Sassuolo remains 17th. Empoli moves up to 13th place.
