Seven communities in the Alkaleri Local Government Area of Bauchi State have benefited from the Watershed Protection For Safe and Sustainable Water Supply, a program of the Wildlife Conservation Society funded by the United States Agency for International Development.
No less than eight boreholes and seven solar-powered boreholes were handed over to Dan, Garin Kweri, Gajin Duguri, Gar and Kafin Duguri, as well as the Wikki Camp in the Yankari Game Reserve by the Wildlife Conservation Society WCS.
Speaking during the handover ceremony at Dan community on Thursday, the Deputy Country Director of Wildlife Conservation Society, Inaoyom Imong, explained that “These boreholes no doubt will serve over 11, 619 people in the communities around the Yankari Game Reserve to improve their well-being.
“The rehabilitation and construction of boreholes in seven communities and the Wikki Camp in Yankari Game Reserve will connect various communities with access to a safe water supply and reduce the risk of waterborne diseases.”
Imong also appreciated the effort and support of the United States Agency for International Development, for giving top priority to the Wildlife Conservation Society, and Partners for Development to discharge their operations effectively.
He noted that the project was implemented in Cross River and Bauchi states, respectively, and aims to provide access to clean drinking water to about two hundred thousand people in 137 communities.
In his remarks during the occasion, the Bauchi State Commissioner for Culture and Tourism, Abdul Hassan, commended the initiative of WCS and Partners for Development, for the construction and rehabilitation of eight boreholes and seven solar-powered boreholes in various communities around the Yankari Game Reserve, saying that “The state government is committed to continue working closely with development partners particularly in the tourism sector for the overall development of the state.”
