Erik ten Hag has provided an update on his options for tomorrow’s trip to face Brentford.
Manchester United’s debilitating injury crisis reached an unprecedented 50 cases of injury or illness prior to the international break, all of which have led to a player missing at least one game.
It came after Jonny Evans was ruled out of the FA Cup quarter-final triumph over Liverpool due to a knock he sustained during the previous week’s win against Everton. He joined the likes of Luke Shaw, Lisandro Martinez, Tyrell Malacia, Anthony Martial and Altay Bayindir on the sidelines for the clash.
Now, the Reds are gearing up for their return to Premier League action, with the manager hoping to have some returnees at his disposal.
Argentina stalwart Martinez could make the squad on Saturday following an eight-week layoff with a knee complaint. He has endured an injury-plagued sophomore campaign at Old Trafford, and his absence has hit hard.
Ten Hag’s team news for Bees clash
Ten Hag said of the centre-half (via Manchester Evening News): “Yes, there is a chance. We have missed him every game because he brings a composure to the team, a calmness in the team. At the same time, a winning attitude and he can express this very clearly. He can transfer that into the team and that contributes a lot to our levels.”
He added: “There are players returning, they are back on the pitch they are back in team training. We have one more training now. But it is most likely that we have some players back in the squad.”
Surprisingly, the Dutchman also revealed that Shaw could feature for United before the term ends, and Gareth Southgate will certainly be keeping tabs on the left-back’s endeavours.
“Yes, I expect him back before the end of the season. He is still on schedule and will return to our team.”
