Shawn Michaels looks back on being part of the first Hell in a Cell match at WWE‘s inaugural Bad Blood event.
WWE first held Bad Blood as an In Your House event on October 5, 1997. In the main event, Michaels faced The Undertaker in the first-ever Hell in a Cell match.
Speaking with Cameron Hawkins of The Ringer, Shawn Michaels reflected on being part of the first Hell in a Cell match.
“I guess I always took pride in the fact that I was always the guinea pig—to see how some of these matches, these new ideas, these new, creative thoughts would work,” Shawn Michaels said. “One of the things I think that really worked to my advantage is that I wasn’t bright enough to understand that maybe I shouldn’t have been putting pressure on myself for those moments.”
Shawn Michaels On Chemistry With The Undertaker
Shawn Michaels then recalled the first time that he saw the Hell in a Cell structure and noted that he wanted to get on top.
“I can remember walking into St. Louis, seeing this unbelievable structure that they had built, and I thought to myself, ‘Oh, it would look like a playground,’” Michaels said. “The first thing that I said is, ‘I got to get on top.’”
“[The Undertaker] and I had great chemistry every time we were in the ring with each other. I feel like that’s exactly what we delivered that night, and not having any idea that it would become a regular part of something that would stand the test of time in the WWE.”
Nearly 30 years to the day of the first Bad Blood, WWE will hold the premium live event again in Atlanta on October 5. CM Punk will face Drew McIntyre in a Hell in a Cell match at the show.
WrestleZone will have coverage of WWE Bad Blood as it airs on October 5.
