Shawn Spears tried his best to enter the 2024 Royal Rumble.

The former AEW star rejoined the company earlier this year. He appeared on NXT in February, attacking Ridge Holland during a shock appearance that nobody saw coming.

However, the former Tye Dillenger did try to come back a month earlier, at this year’s Royal Rumble event.

Spears wanted to come back in the number 10 spot, but was too late in pitching the idea to WWE to get it accepted on time for the Rumble.

He spoke with Fightful’s Sean Ross Sapp, saying:

“I will say that I shot my shot. I shot my shot, I just don’t think I got it in early enough, I was too late. But I did shoot my shot, I tried. All I can do is ‘Hey, how about this?’ and I let the rest go and play out as I can. I think I was a little late to the party. You never know. Thats what they tell you, right? You never know.”

Dax Harwood Calls Shawn Spears The Most Underrated Wrestler

Following his exit from AEW in December, the wrestling world was not shy about paying tribute to Shawn Spears.

The former WWE star’s contract expired at the end of last year. He left the company after making his debut at their first ever show (AEW Double or Nothing 2019), having wrestled consistently for the promotion over the past four years.

His former Pinnacle teammate Dax Harwood was incredibly flattering towards Spears. One half of FTR said on Twitter he was “the most underrated wrestler” he’s faced in the ring with.

“I would say, probably the most underrated wrestler I’ve ever been in the ring with. Great teacher of our business and an even better human being,”
