Sheamus has revealed his thinking behind the creation of the Donnybrook match.
The match, which is also called a “Good Old’ Fashioned Donnybrook Match”, was first created by the Irishman back in 2022. The first iteration of the match was against Drew McIntyre in July of that year.
The match was effectively a no-disqualification match. However, it was made clear Drew McIntyre’s sword was not allowed. It also reintroduced the shillelagh as a weapon in the WWE, over a decade after Finlay retired from action.
The match has evolved into more of a bar fight in the ring. The match against Pete Dunne on Raw, which was only the third Donnybrook match in history. It certainly did the match type justice in that regard.
Sheamus took to Twitter after victory on Raw to explain the history behind the Donnybrook match.
The former WWE Champion explained that he created the match because a bar fight in the WWE was something he knew would “bring the house down”.
The term Donnybrook comes from a fair in the town of Donnybrook, which for 700 years was known as a “disorderly event”, with fights prone to breaking out.
The word is know associated with an Irish bar fight, which suits Sheamus just fight.
“I created the ‘Donnybrook’ match because.. an Irish bar fight in a WWE ring was something I knew would bring the house down, every time. Plus, i get home field advantage #bangerafterbanger“
