Alexandre Lacazette was keen to bring Olympic gold back to France. Unfortunately, the defeat in the final against Spain put an end to that dream.

Not called up to the French team since 2017 by Didier Deschamps, Alexandre Lacazette did not miss the opportunity to don the tricolor jersey again for the Olympic Games this summer. The Olympique Lyonnais striker was one of three players over the age of 23, alongside Loïc Badé and Jean-Philippe Mateta, to join the Bleuets squad for the tournament.

The former Arsenal striker was even given the captain’s armband by his manager, Thierry Henry. However,

after a high-flying final lost against Spain (5-3) this Friday
Lacazette, unable to guide his teammates to victory, has a bitter taste from this defeat.

The golden objective narrowly missed

“From the beginning, I said that we were aiming for gold, you always have to aim high. It remains a great adventure, especially for me, I hadn’t worn the blue jersey for a few years. I’m going to try to keep only positive and happy things. (…) After our goal in the first half, we had a hole for several minutes that we were lacking. But the match is over, there’s no point going back over it, the adventure is over. We’re going to try to be positive, to keep beautiful images from these two months that we spent together.”Lacazette said on France 2.

“We wanted to remain in history with this gold medal. That’s what’s a little difficult today. We know that there are positives, but also that the fact of having lost takes away a little of that satisfaction.”he regretted.
