Manchester United’s new co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe refuses to completely rule out a future at the club for Mason Greenwood. Instead their will be a fresh decision made over the 22-year-old’s future.
Greenwood is currently on loan at Getafe attracting interest from a number of clubs after United confirmed he would leave Old Trafford following an internal investigation into his arrest on suspicion of rape, assault and making threats to kill. All charges were dropped by the Crown Prosecution Service in February 2023.
The former United academy star has not played for the Reds since January 22, 2022, in a 1-0 win over West Ham. It is felt that a return to the squad would face immediate backlash from supporters.
Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s deal to buy 27.7% of United was confirmed on Tuesday night and he sat down with reporters on Wednesday to answer a series of questions, including several regarding Greenwood.
Ratcliffe was initially asked if a fresh decision would be made on Greenwood’s future.
“Yes, absolutely. We will make a decision and we will justify it,” Ratcliffe said, as per The Athletic.
“He’s on loan obviously but he’s not the only one. We’ve got one or two footballers that we have to deal with and we have to make a decision on so we will do that.
“The process will be: understand the facts not the hype and then try and come to fair decision on the basis of values which is basically is he a good guy or not, and answer could he play sincerely for Manchester United well and would we be comfortable with it and would the fans be comfortable with it.”
Ratcliffe was also quoted by BBC, saying: “We need to look at facts, judge fairly and take into consideration what the values of the club are.
“Then we come out of that with a decision. It is not appropriate for me to comment on Mason Greenwood.”
United made a U-turn on their Greenwood decision in the past, but now it sounds like Ratcliffe and INEOS want to make their call on the matter, even if it opens up a can of worms.
