Luke Shaw was “destroyed” by Jose Mourinho, according to Sir Jim Ratcliffe, who claimed the Portuguese manager oversaw a “catastrophic” spell at Manchester United.

From 2016 till 2018, the Portuguese were in charge at Old Trafford. Despite winning the Europa League and the League Cup in his debut season, he was unable to lead the team to further success.

After a disastrous third season, the Red Devils management fired Mourinho, and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer took his place.

It’s also safe to conclude that Ratcliffe, United’s new partial owner, did not think highly of the former Chelsea manager’s contribution to his boyhood club.

Ratcliffe stated to The Telegraph at the time:

“I am a season ticket holder at Chelsea. Have been for years, although I’m a Manchester United fan really. Or was….

“It’s not getting any better [at United]. It’s gone from bad to catastrophic. Talk about a glass-half-empty. And then you look at Mourinho. He’s so down. He destroyed Luke Shaw last season.”

In the end, Mourinho was fired in the middle of December 2018. After a terrible stint at United’s Premier League rivals Tottenham, the former Chelsea and Tottenham coach finds himself jobless once more after a span of four years.

Today, Mourinho was sacked by Roma after the Italian club dropped to ninth place in the Serie A standings, following a defeat against AC Milan.

Mourinho’s contract was supposed to expire at the end of the current campaign, but he has now been let go.

The former Real Madrid and Inter Milan manager has been linked to Newcastle United, who might be looking to replace Eddie Howe soon.
