Manchester United are braced for disappointment in their pursuit of ‘world-class’ fullback Alphonso Davies.
As are Real Madrid and Barcelona, it seems, as the defender has instead decided to extend his stay with Bayern Munich ahead of his terms expiring in 2025.
Nothing is signed and sealed as of yet, but Sky Sports Germany reporter Florian Plettenberg claims there has been ‘significant progress’ made between the 24-year-old and the club, with United now ‘aware’ that Davies is leaning towards a contract renewal.

(Photo by Sebastian Widmann/Getty Images)Losing a player of his calibre for nothing would’ve been unfathomable for the Bayern hierarchy, especially to a fellow European giant like Madrid, who were thought to be leading the race for his signature.
As for the Blaugrana’s interest, Davies was said to be mulling over a move due to the prospect of reuniting with former Bayern boss Hansi Flick.
Yet, it looks as though he’ll be extending his Allianz tenure beyond seven years, having joined from Vancouver Whitecaps in 2018. He quickly established himself as an integral starter and soon emerged as one of the hottest prospects in world football – it’s safe to say he’s lived up to such expectations, too.
Plettenberg shared this afternoon: “FC Bayern have made significant progress regarding a contract extension with Alphonso Davies beyond 2025.
“Negotiations are ongoing and positive, key figures already discussed. But some more details need to be clarified.
“The focus is on a new long-term contract. In terms of salary, Davies has made significant concessions to Bayern. Further crucial talks are set to take place before Christmas. Not a done deal yet.
‘Manchester United are also aware that Davies is likely to sign a new contract with Bayern.”
Elsewhere, United are reportedly sounding out a swoop for AC Milan’s vice-captain Theo Hernandez following the news of yet another injury setback to Luke Shaw.
