Manchester United and Benfica are reportedly negotiating the transfer of Tyrell Malacia who is set to become surplus to requirements.

The Dutchman joined the Red Devils in the summer of 2022, completing a transfer from Feyenoord for £13 million. However, the left-back’s first campaign at Old Trafford was underwhelming overall, while a serious injury wrecked his second season. The 25-year-old has now returned to action, but remains far from his best physical shape as illustrated by his unconvincing displays.

Therefore, Man Utd have resorted to the market, bringing in Patrick Dorgu on a deal worth around €35 million. The 20-year-old Dane is currently finalizing his transfer from Lecce after weeks of negotiations. The youngster is considered one of the most promising young left-backs on the continent, having delighted Serie A fans in the past year or so.

Moreover, Luke Shaw has recently returned to training and is now on the cusp of making his return to action. Hence, Malacia is unlikely to find much space in Amorim’s selection in the second half of the season, so his exit has been in the air for quite some time.

According to Sky Sports, Man Utd are currently discussing a potential transfer with Benfica who are interested in acquiring the services of the Netherlands international.

As the source explains, the Premier League giants want Malacia to earn regular football this season which should help him regain his optimal physical shape. So since playing time will be hard to come by at Old Trafford, they’re looking to send the former Feyenoord man out on loan.

Malacia only made nine appearances across all competitions this term following his return from injury, collecting a total of 361 minutes on the pitch, without making any direct goal contribution.
