EXCLUSIVE: Nicholas Braun, Tommy Dewey and Nicholas Podany have joined the cast of Sony Pictures’ SNL 1975, which will be directed by Jason Reitman and based on the real-life behind-the-scenes accounts of the opening episode of Saturday Night Live.
Braun will play Jim Henson, Dewey will play Michael O’Donoghue and Podany will play Billy Crystal. The original screenplay is written by Reitman and Gil Kenan.
On October 11, 1975, a ferocious troupe of young comedians and writers changed television forever. SNL 1975 is the true story of what happened behind the scenes that night in the moments leading up to the first broadcast of NBC’s SNL. It depicts the chaos and magic of a revolution that almost wasn’t, counting down the minutes in real time to the infamous words, “Live from New York, it’s Saturday Night!”
The screenplay is based on an extensive series of interviews conducted by Reitman and Kenan with all the living cast members, writers and crew. Reitman, Kenan, Jason Blumenfeld, Erica Mills and Peter Rice are producing.
Braun is best known for starring in HBO’s critically acclaimed and award-winning drama series Succession, in which he earned three Emmy nominations and a Critics Choice Award. In film, Braun starred alongside Emilia Jones in Cat Person, which premiered at the 2023 Sundance Film Festival and is currently available on Hulu. It is a psychological thriller based on the viral New Yorker short story, surrounding a relationship between an unlikely pair. Up next, Braun is set to develop, co-write and executive produce One For The Road, a music series for HBO. Other credits include starring opposite Riley Keough in the A24 indie film Zola, Warner Bros romantic comedy How To Be Single, opposite Dakota Johnson, Rebel Wilson, Alison Brie, and Leslie Mann, and Whiskey Tango Foxtrot, opposite Tina Fey, Margot Robbie, and Martin Freeman.
Dewey plays the title role in Caroline Lindy’s film, Your Monster, which recently premiered at Sundance and which he also executive produced. Dewey is best known for his co-lead role on Hulu’s Golden Globe-nominated original series Casual opposite Michaela Watkins. He also starred in the 2002 FOX comedy series Pivoting, appeared on HBO’s Perry Mason and received acclaim for his recurring role in The Mindy Project. On the feature side, he has starred in Paramount’s Book Club with Diane Keaton and Jane Fonda, Marc Carlini’s indie dramedy, She’s In Portland, and Jason Reitman’s The Front Runner with Hugh Jackman.
Podany’s credits include Apple TV+’s Hello Tomorrow starring Billy Crudup and Alison Pilland up next, he will play Mercutio in Verona, starring Jason Isaacs and Rebel Wilson. He has also played Albus Potter in the Broadway play Harry Potter And The Cursed Child.
