SNL Drama! Bowen Yang Swears He Was NOT Making Fun Of Chappell Roan With Moo Deng Sketch!

Bowen Yang doesn’t want any drama with Chappell Roan… But is it too late after his viral Saturday Night Live sketch??

If you watched the Season 50 premiere, you may have seen a special guest appearance from the Internet’s latest obsession — pygmy hippo Moo Deng. You know, this one:

Awww! And amid the baby hippo’s meteoric rise to fame, Bowen channeled the Good Luck, Babe! singer to inform his character of Moo Deng during the Weekend Update. While in a baby hippo costume, he tells crowds to chill out with their parasocial relationships to him:

“It has come to the point where I need to set some boundaries … Reminder: women owe you nothing. When I’m in my enclosure tripping over stuff, biting my trainer’s knee, I am at work. That is the project. Do not yell my name or expect a photo just because I’m your parasocial bestie, or because you appreciate my talent … The harassment has been intolerable.”

If this all sounds familiar, it’s because Chappell went viral last month after hopping on TikTok to give a public service announcement about how fans shouldn’t expect her to take photos with them because she’s just some “random lady” who has her own life, and firmly stated she won’t stand for “abuse, harassment, and stalking.” See (below):

So after Bowen’s sketch aired, netizens accused him of mocking the Hot To Go singer… Which he swears is not the case!

Over the weekend, he took to his Instagram Story to write:

“oh geez. ‘mocks’??? if my personal and the piece aren’t absolutely clear in terms of supporting her then there it is i guess. everything she has ever asked for has been reasonable and even then we can connect it to another story about boundaries or whatever”

Ah, see, he’s not making fun of Chappell Roan’s message to fans by putting the words into the mouth of a baby hippo. He’s saying the point was to make fun of the weird fan treatment of stars like Chappell by comparing it to the way they treat a literal animal in a cage. Makes sense to us. Obviously some people are just going to take the fact he’s making light of any of it as problematic — and they aren’t interested in the nuance. What are ya gonna do?
