Saturday Night Live (SNL) found itself in hot water after last night’s episode featured a sketch that many viewers felt crossed the line. Cast member Ego Nwodim, who hosted the controversial skit, played a character named Giselle—a concerned businesswoman stopping by the Weekend Update desk to discuss executive orders and tariffs signed by Donald Trump.

While the premise might have started innocently enough, the sketch took a turn when it began making jokes that many felt were in poor taste. The character, Giselle, joked about Black women needing hair weaves and made other remarks that critics have called racially insensitive. Some viewers felt the jokes perpetuated harmful stereotypes about Black women, including their appearance and femininity, with references to them being bald or resembling men.

On social media, the backlash was swift, with fans and critics alike questioning how such a skit made it to air. Many pointed out that even with a Black woman like Ego Nwodim delivering the lines, the content felt tone-deaf and harmful, especially in a time when representation and sensitivity in comedy are more important than ever.

“SNL really thought it was okay to air a sketch that makes Black women the punchline? Do better,” one Twitter user wrote. Others expressed disappointment in Nwodim herself, arguing that as a Black woman, she should have recognized the problematic nature of the jokes.

Some defended the skit, claiming it was meant to be satirical, but for many viewers, the humor didn’t land. Instead, the sketch left a sour taste, sparking conversations about how comedy often uses Black women as the butt of the joke—and why that needs to stop.

Neither SNL nor Ego Nwodim has addressed the controversy yet, but the episode has certainly reignited discussions about the fine line between comedy and disrespect.
