EXCLUSIVE: The Mother Lode, the second comedy special from SNL writer, actress and stand-up Rosebud Baker, is set to premiere globally on Netflix on February 11.
Taped months apart during two sold-out nights at the Comedy Cellar in New York City, the special intercuts between Baker before and after giving birth. With the juxtaposition of these experiences, she unpacks navigating the unknown in the evolving journey of parenthood, delving into the decision to have kids, the indignities of childbirth, the pros and cons of losing your identity in motherhood, generational divides of upbringings, along with coming to the difficult decision to retire from giving blow jobs, and more.
The Mother Lode marks the directorial debut of Baker, who performs her own material and also served as producer, with Alex Goodman and Jason Katz executive producing.
In a statement to Deadline, the comic said, “If you have kids, this special is for you. If you absolutely do not want kids, this special is also for you.”
Noting that there’s “a lot of people in the world navigating infertility, miscarriage, IVF, pregnancy and postpartum,” Baker shares, “I’ve been through all of that and I wanted to make a special that made anyone going through those experiences laugh as badly as I needed to while I was going through them. We shot over two years because I wanted to tell the full story- to include what the other side of pregnancy looks like; and I needed to live through it in order to tell jokes about it. My number one hope is that it makes everyone laugh. It would be nice if it also made them feel less alone.”
Currently writing on the 50th season of Saturday Night Live, Baker’s critically acclaimed debut hour Whiskey Fists, produced by Bill Burr’s All Things Comedy, premiered on Comedy Central’s YouTube channel in 2021. In addition to SNL, she’s written for two WGA Award-nominated sketch series: That Damn Michael Che and Inside Amy Schumer. She plays the recurring role of Meri on Hulu’s Life & Beth, alongside Schumer and Michael Cera, and also appears in the upcoming horror comedy Hell of a Summer, directed by Finn Wolfhard and Billy Bryk.
Baker is represented by Brillstein Entertainment Partners, UTA for touring, CAA, and Schreck Rose Dapello.
