Vincent Kompany has spoken out to dismiss claims surrounding Matthijs de Ligt’s recent transfer to Manchester United.

Yesterday, a report from The Athletic claimed that after learning of Bayern Munich’s desire to sell him this summer, De Ligt went to Kompany to question why this was the case.

He was then informed by his manager that he was his ‘No.1 defender’, which led both to infer that the decision was made at board level.

However, the former Manchester City skipper has today reacted to the widely-circulated speculation, insisting that such a dialogue never took place.

Kompany responds to inaccurate reports

“It would’ve been so stupid of me to say something like that. It wouldn’t fit with what we’ve planned for the entire squad. It makes no sense,” he said, as quoted by Fabrizio Romano.

Nonetheless, the United hierarchy or fans won’t concern themselves with the intricate details of De Ligt’s exit. All that matters now is he’s fit and ready to kick on at Old Trafford – a few years later than supporters had originally hoped, though!

The 25-year-old may be awarded his first start when the Reds lock horns with Brighton and Hove Albion at the Amex this afternoon.
