The Sokoto State Government has extended its condolences and pledged support to victims of the recent fire outbreak at the ‘Karar-‘Yan-Nika’ area of Kara Market in Sokoto.
The inferno, which devastated over 50 shops, destroyed 132 grinding machines and consumed substantial quantities of food items such as rice, millet, and beans, resulting in losses worth millions of naira.
Leading the government’s response, the Deputy Governor, Alhaji Idris Gobir, visited the scene to sympathise with those affected.
During his visit, he announced the formation of a committee to assess the extent of the damage and recommend measures to prevent such occurrences in the future.
“The harmattan season, with its dry and windy conditions, significantly increases the risk of fire outbreaks. It is imperative for everyone to adopt necessary precautions,” Gobir stated.
He assured the victims that the government would act promptly once the committee submits its findings.
The fire has severely impacted both indigenous and non-indigenous traders, many of whom depend on the market for their livelihood.
The Chairman of the Grinders Association, Malam Yakubu Bello, expressed grief over the substantial losses, highlighting the critical role of grinding machines in the market’s daily operations.
Similarly, the Chairman of the Youth Traders Association, Alhaji Bashar Nuhu, expressed gratitude to the deputy governor for his visit.
He described it as a sign of the government’s commitment to its people and urged for robust support, noting that many of the affected traders are young entrepreneurs.
The Sokoto State Emergency Management Agency also responded swiftly to the incident.
The Special Adviser to SEMA, Aminu Bodinga, commended the government’s proactive measures, describing the Deputy Governor’s visit as timely and impactful.
Accompanied by Bashir Muhammad, another SEMA adviser, Bodinga emphasised the need for immediate relief and long-term solutions to prevent similar disasters in the region.
The state government’s prompt response underscores its dedication to supporting affected residents and implementing strategies to safeguard local businesses from future calamities.
