As the Sokoto State Local Government election approaches, Governor Ahmed Aliyu has assured the public of his administration’s commitment to conducting a free, fair, and credible election in all 23 local government areas.
The governor also urged the Peoples Democratic Party to reconsider its decision to boycott the forthcoming local government polls, scheduled for 21 September 2024.
He made this appeal on Sunday while addressing a large crowd of APC supporters from eight local governments in the Sokoto East Senatorial Zone, who gathered in Goronyo for the flag-off of the APC campaign ahead of the upcoming local government elections in the state.
“The leaders of the Sokoto Independent Electoral Commission were appointed by the previous PDP administration, and I have not altered that structure.
“I wonder why the PDP is afraid of participating in the elections organised by SIEC,” he remarked.
To this end, Aliyu assured the opposition in the state that SIEC, under his administration, would conduct free, fair, and credible local government elections.
“I had a meeting with the Chairman of SIEC, and he assured me of transparent elections. Whoever wins will be declared the winner,” Aliyu affirmed.
The governor, therefore, called on residents of the state to come out in large numbers and vote for the party’s candidates to ensure the continuation of people-oriented projects in the state.
According to him, the present administration has performed well in all sectors of development.
He added that farmers in the state have been benefiting from free fertiliser, pesticides, and other agricultural inputs as part of the government’s measures to boost agricultural production.
Aliyu said, “We have installed many solar-powered streetlights, constructed numerous roads, and our workers receive their salaries between the 19th and 20th of each month, unlike under the previous administration.”
Also speaking, the APC leader in the state, Senator Aliyu Wamakko, described politics as a service to the people and commended Governor Aliyu for transforming the state within just one year.
“Mr Governor, we are very proud of you. You have made significant progress in all sectors of development in the state. Please continue the good work,” Wamakko added.
He also urged the people of the state to continue supporting the current administration so it can deliver more on its campaign promises.
In his remarks, the state Deputy Governor, Idris Gobir, assured the people of Sokoto East that the present administration is working tirelessly to end banditry in the zone.
According to him, the state government is introducing more measures to ensure the safety and security of the state.
He also appealed for further support from well-meaning citizens in this regard.
Additionally, the Minister of Water and Sanitation, Bello Muhammad Goronyo, praised the current administration for delivering the dividends of democracy to every corner of the state.
He assured Governor Aliyu of the continued support of the people in the area.
Other speakers at the rally included the State APC Chairman, Isa Saddiq Achida, Ambassador Abubakar Shehu Wurno, former Member representing Gada and Goronyo Federal Constituency Musa S. Adar, as well as representatives of the APC Chairmen and Sole Administrators in the zone.
The highlight of the event was the presentation of the party’s flags to its candidates in the forthcoming local government elections by the APC leader in the state, Senator Aliyu Magatakarda Wamakko.
