Sokoto State Governor, Ahmed Aliyu, has appealed to the Federal Government to assist flood victims in the Tangaza and Illela Local Government Areas of the state.

The governor made the plea on Wednesday during a visit to the two LGs to assess the extent of the destruction caused by the devastating floods.

He stated that this year’s flooding has affected 22 LGs, with Tangaza and Illela being the worst hit.

Aliyu lamented, “The destruction caused by this flood is severe, with hundreds of houses and farmlands destroyed, leaving many people homeless. It has also wiped out farmlands, leading to food shortages in the affected communities.”

He continued, “I appeal to our father, the President, who has a listening ear, to assist these two LGs so that they can find relief from this terrible situation.”

The governor emphasised the importance of federal intervention, given the economic significance of the two LGs. He warned, “These communities may face severe food shortages and socio-economic crises due to the scale of the flooding.”

Aliyu also urged the local communities to regularly clear their drainages and avoid indiscriminate waste disposal. He advised them to view the disaster as an act of God and prayed for the prevention of future occurrences.

In Maiduguri, the Borno State capital, more than 414,000 people have been displaced and 30 lives lost due to a devastating flood.

The National Emergency Management Agency attributed the flood to the overflow of the Alau Dam following heavy rains, marking the worst flooding in the town in 30 years, according to the UN Refugee Agency and local residents.
