Solar Opposites‘ New Halloween Special Prepares to Unleash Witchy Sci-Fi Chaos

Solar Opposites season five arrived in August, with a sixth in the works, but you won’t have to wait long for more Shlorpian misadventures. Their fourth holiday special—their second this year, after that sweet yet unhinged take on Valentine’s Day; it’s also their second Halloween-themed entry thus far—is coming very soon. Its jokey full title is The “Solar Opposites” Halloween Special Part 2: The Hunt for Brown October, and a trailer has just crash-landed.

At this summer’s San Diego Comic-Con, when the special was announced, Solar Opposites‘ creators revealed it would be a direct sequel to the 2022 Halloween special. Speaking to io9 in August, executive producers Sydney Ryan and Mike McMahan offered slightly more to that tease: “It also plays on The Santa Clause, the Tim Allen movie from the ‘90s,” Ryan said, with McMahan adding, “We kind of steal or crib the structural problem of The Santa Clause and apply it to people in a Halloween situation. It’s very fun.”

Korvo, as it’s previously been established, hates being scared, and therefore hates the entire “spooky-ass month” of October. The first Halloween special saw Terry and Jessie scheming to have the best-decorated home on their block—to the point of re-animating a chatty Crypt Keeper from a nearby cemetery, to Korvo’s supreme annoyance. (He eventually bonded with “Cryptie” while escaping from a psychotically competitive neighbor whose entire identity revolved around being “the Halloween guy.”)

This time around, the official synopsis only supplies the following: “Spooky stuff is afoot when the Spirit of Halloween starts to take over Korvo’s life.” The trailer suggests a witch’s curse is part of that, along with the return of the Great Pumpkin, plenty of dark magic, the Solars’ new pet robot dressed as Pikachu, and Terry wearing a seasonally appropriate selection from his drawer of punny t-shirts. And though there’s no sign of Cryptie, it’s absolutely certain that Korvo still hates Halloween. (The Santa Clause connection isn’t really apparent in the trailer, but no doubt it’s part of what’s driving all this candy corn-scented mayhem.)

Solar Opposites‘ cast includes Dan Stevens as Korvo (if you go back and watch the first Halloween special, it’s officially now weird to see Korvo speaking in his “old” voice), Thomas Middleditch as Terry, Sean Giambrone as Yumyulack, and Mary Mack as Jessie.

The “Solar Opposites” Halloween Special Part 2: The Hunt for Brown October streams October 7 on Hulu. Will you be checking it out?
