Governor Alex Otti of Abia State announced that the government has begun receiving credible intelligence regarding the killing of five soldiers on May 30 in Aba.

Otti made this announcement on Thursday during a morale-boosting visit to the officers and personnel of the 144 Battalion Nigerian Army at Ngwa High School, Aba.

According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), five soldiers were killed by unidentified gunmen at Obikabia Junction in Aba on May 30.

The Governor explained that the government’s intelligence efforts concerning the incident were beginning to bear fruit and assured that these efforts would continue.

“We have started obtaining very reliable information,” Otti said. “This intelligence gathering will persist, but I do not want it to affect your morale. We have all been collaborating to secure this state over the past year, and I encourage you to continue your work without distraction.”

Otti suggested that the attack might have been carried out by those opposed to Abia’s progress, promising to apprehend all involved. He also mentioned visiting the widows of the deceased soldiers, committing to their welfare and the education of their children up to university level.

“The state has placed a bounty of N25 million on anyone with information leading to the capture and prosecution of those involved in this act,” he added.

Otti appealed to the Army to conduct their investigation with care, recognizing that some detained individuals might be innocent. He noted that most of the people questioned by the Nigerian Army had been released, except for about 10 who were still under investigation.

“We support thorough investigation, but we also urge you to recognize that many innocent civilians you encounter may not be involved. It is even possible that those who committed this crime came from outside the state. We do not want to punish the innocent alongside the guilty,” he said.

The Governor praised the Nigerian Army for their dedication to protecting citizens, which has significantly enhanced the safety of lives and property in Abia. He urged the soldiers to stay vigilant and not let the killing of their colleagues dampen their spirits.

Governor Otti was received by Brigadier General Olusola Diya, Commander of the 14 Brigade Ohafia, and Major K.P. Duniya, Commanding Officer of the 144 Battalion.
