William Gallas insists former clubs Arsenal and Chelsea would have to be ‘thick’ to pay £100million for Ivan Toney during the January transfer window.

The London clubs are in the market for a striker this month with the Brentford star – who can return to action this weekend after serving his ban – a target for both.

Chelsea’s problems up front are well-documented with Cole Palmer their top scorer with eight goals this season ahead of summer signing Nicolas Jackson who has scored seven – three of those coming in the victory over nine-man Tottenham in November.

Arsenal meanwhile are the lowest scorers among the five clubs at the top of the Premier League with Eddie Nketiah and Gabriel Jesus scoring just eight league goals between them.

Brentford are adamant Toney will not be sold this month and have placed a £100million asking price on their prized asset.

Former Gunners captain Gallas views that as a ridiculous price for a 27-year-old who has won just one cap for his country, doubting either of his former sides with pay that fee this month.

‘How much would Arsenal or Chelsea pay for him? Some clubs are thick,’ Gallas told Gambling Zone.

‘They don’t realise that there’s too much money in football so they’ll pay £100m for Toney.

‘That means the player has to be an international player. He has hardly played for England. How can you explain to me that his price is £100m?

‘If you buy a player for £100m, he has to be a young player. Spending £100m on a 27-year-old is too much.

‘Either you spend £100m on an international player or a young player that a team can invest in for the long-term.’

Despite the growing interest in his services, Toney has vowed to repay Brentford for their support during his time on the sidelines, vowing to repay that faith.

‘Thomas Frank has been nothing but the biggest help I could have asked for – the whole club has,’ Toney told Sky Sports last week.

‘From putting on extra sessions for me, from taking their time out to put a session on and go outside when it’s raining when they’re not supposed to be in. I have a lot to repay them and I can’t wait to try and do that.’
