Somehow, Attack on Titan Has Returned One Last Time

Before Attack on Titan’s anime finally wrapped up late last year, it was a running gag that the show just wouldn’t end. Being split into four parts across three years gave it a notorious reputation, and it turns out we’re not done just yet.

Earlier today, Studio MAPPA revealed it’s got one more film for the series in the works. Fittingly titled Attack on Titan The Movie: The Last Attack, the 145-minute film comprises the last two parts of the anime’s final season (so episodes 29-35). Speaking to Crunchyroll, series director Yuichiro Hayashi said the visuals would be updated from their original aired version. As for why turn the finale into a film, he explained that during development, he drew storyboards for the last season “[thinking] it’d be watched as a single movie. Having the opportunity to have everyone watch it in the best possible environment, the theater, is a dream come true for me.”

To be fair, compilation films are nothing new for Attack on Titan. There’s been at least one per season, and later movies served as recaps for the seasons they were attached to. In season four’s case, the last two parts were initially released as a pair of specials before they were released as individual episodes later on. Still, it is a little funny that MAPPA just hasn’t been able to fully unattach itself from this series and move on quite yet. Will this be the studio’s true, final farewell before committing to Jujutsu Kaisen or other projects? We’ll find out when Attack on Titan The Movie: The Last Attack hits theaters on November 8 in Japan.

And if that movie doesn’t sound like your cup of tea, Attack on Titan’s final chapters will release on DVD and Blu-Ray on November 26.
