EXCLUSIVE: Kurt Sutter and Katey Sagal have teamed up for their first podcast, PIE. People. Influences. Experiences. The program will start April 2, available on all podcast players and YouTube.

They describe PIE as an intimate parlor conversation exploring the ingredients that “baked up” each guest. It is a respectful, deep dive into nature and nurture — family, faith, friends, hometowns, schooling, mentors, tormentors, etc. It will be the heart-to-heart chat that gives us some authentic insight into each guest’s personal and professional choices — in the arts, athletics, healthcare, politics, etc.

I can testify that between them, this couple can cover a healthy span of topics. A few years back, I convinced Sutter to co-live blog the Emmys for Deadline. Only when I arrived at their home did I learn that Kurt had been so busy as the writer, director and producer of my fave FX series Sons of Anarchy, that he hadn’t actually watched any of the programs in Emmy contention. Katey Sagal saved my ass. Not only had she seen everything, she knew everyone. She told great stories about those shows and the people involved, while Kurt regaled us with inside stories on putting together that drama on the motorcycle club. Maybe they will invite me back for an encore.

Aside from the Emmy-nominated Sons of Anarchy (also playing the long suffering club member Otto), Sutter co-created with Elgin James the Sons spinoff Mayans M.C., which wrapped its fifth and final season on FX last year. He also created and served as showrunner of the limited FX series The Bastard Executioner and is currently showrunning The Abandons, a period action drama series he created for Netflix, through his Sutterink Banner. It is set to release in 2025.

After starting as a singer who backed up Bette Midler in her live shows as a member of The Harlettes, Sagal burst on the scene as a TV star when she played Peg Bundy on Married…With Children, the sitcom that launched the fledgling Fox Network. Aside from her Golden Globe-winning turn in Sons — if you watched over seven seasons her performance as Sons matriarch Gemma Teller Morrow you probably are reminded of her character every time you pull a meat fork out of a kitchen drawer — her credits include Rebel, Superior Donuts, 8 Simple Rules, and Lost. Her film work includes Bleed for This, Pitch Perfect 2 and The Good Mother. She’s currently working on the ABC sitcom The Conners and does the voice of Leela on Futurama for Hulu/Disney+.

As hosts, Sutter and Sagal will draw from their own experiences and challenges — navigating marriage, family, and careers — to compel that mutual sharing of experiences from their well-known guests.

Partnering with advertisecast for sales and Big IP Media with Katie Curtright, Harris Lane and Scott Porch attached to produce, the podcast will be distributed as simulcast, released both in video and audio formats, as a weekly series.
