Russell Martin not a happy man after the final whistle.
The Southampton boss watching on as a Newcastle United team played with 10 men for 73 minutes (including added time).
Russell Martin seeing his player Ben Brereton Diaz get Fabian Schar sent off on 28 minutes thanks to some shameful cheating.
The Saints manager claiming his side actually deserved to win, never mind get a draw.
The truth is though that the Newcastle United outfield players were magnificent and even with a man down, Southampton only managed five efforts on target in the entire 101 minutes. Then only one of those was a challenging save for Nick Pope, tipping over Armstrong’s effort.
Russell Martin somehow thinking the visitors should have had at least three goals.
Russell Martin talking to BBC Sport after Southampton’s defeat to 10 man Newcastle United:
“We should have scored three goals today.
“We brought on every attacking player we had.
“I don’t think we learned anything new about our players today, apart from the fact they are new to this league.
“We had 60 minutes playing against 10 men.
“We had enough chances to win the game, let alone draw it, but I’m so proud of the team.
“We made one mistake and we paid the price.
“Maybe it’s that little bit of belief that is missing but I’m really proud of the team today.”
Russell Martin on Joelinton’s goal after Isak pounced on a mistake and cut out a pass from the Southampton keeper:
“It is down to a lack of intensity.
“I knew that would be the narrative coming into the Premier League.”
