Southampton Women have announced the signing of Norwegian star Benedicte Haaland in the January transfer window.

The 25-year-old goalkeeper, who is not related to Manchester City superstar Erling Haaland, joins the Women’s Championship side after a spell in the Women’s Super League (WSL) with Bristol City.

She has represented Norway at U17 and U19 level and has played for several teams across Europe, including a recent stint with Scottish club Hibernian.

‘I’m very excited, I’ve heard great things about the club and it’s very good to be here,’ Haaland said after completing her move to the south coast.

‘I’ve been following Southampton and have seen how quickly they’ve done well in the last few years. It’s definitely something I wanted to be a part of.’

Southampton boss Marieanne Spacey-Cale added: ‘We’re really pleased to welcome Benedicte to the club.

‘She’ll add some further experience to our goalkeeping unit and help provide real competition for Kayla [Rendell] and Beth [Howard].’

Southampton currently sit fourth in the Women’s Championship as they look to gain promotion to the WSL – the top-flight of women’s football.

The Saints are just two points behind league leaders Charlton after the opening 13 games of the season.

Southampton beat Watford 3-0 in their last match and return to action on Thursday when they face Tottenham in the Women’s League Cup.
