Southampton have dismissed manager Russell Martin following their humiliating 5-0 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday.

The heavy loss, with all five goals conceded in the first half, marked Southampton’s 13th defeat in 16 Premier League matches this season, leaving them nine points adrift of safety.

Earlier in the day, Wolves had sacked Gary O’Neil after a fourth consecutive league defeat, and Southampton have now followed suit, ending Martin’s 18-month tenure at the club.

In a statement, the club said:

“We can confirm that we have taken the difficult decision to part ways with our Men’s First Team Manager, Russell Martin. Going into the season, we knew the challenges of readjusting to life in the top flight, competing in the most competitive league in the world.”

“However, the reality of our situation is clear. The board has supported Russell and his staff while maintaining transparency about expectations. Unfortunately, results have not improved, and we all recognize the urgency of the situation.”

The club thanked Martin and his staff for their dedication, highlighting the success of last season, including their Championship Play-Off Final triumph in May.

Under-21s manager Simon Rusk has been appointed interim head coach. The club emphasized its ongoing commitment to nurturing young talent, stating:

“We remain proud of the contributions of our Academy players, who continue to be a source of strength for the club.”

Southampton also expressed gratitude to their supporters, acknowledging their loyalty during a difficult campaign:

“Your understanding and passion, even in challenging times, continue to drive our commitment to the club’s long-term vision.”
