Manchester United completed their second summer signing yesterday by announcing Leny Yoro as the club’s new player.
The French centre-back has joined from Ligue 1 club Lille and Man United had to beat tough competition to sign him.
The Red Devils had to beat Champions League winners Real Madrid to sign the young prospect while Liverpool and Paris Saint-Germain were also interested in signing the player.
Yoro joins striker Joshua Zirkzee as the club’s new recruit this summer in a major revamp of the squad.
According to MARCA, Lille “threatened” Yoro that he would be dropped from the team for a year if he rejects a move to Man United.
Real Madrid had planned a clever strategy to sign the young defender. They were willing to wait for another year to sign him as a free agent next summer.
Yoro had entered the final year of his contract at Lille and he would have become a free agent next summer.
That is when the La Liga champions had decided to make their move in order to sign the player for free instead of paying a transfer fee for him this summer.
Man United won the race to sign Leny Yoro over Real Madrid. However, Lille were made aware of this situation and they reportedly threatened the 18-year-old defender to drop him for an entire season if he does not join Man United this summer.
The French club wanted to get as much money as possible for their prized asset instead of losing him for free.
Man United ended up winning the Yoro race
Whatever happened between Lille and Real Madrid, it all worked out in the favour of United who ended up getting one of the best young defenders in the game at the moment.
He has all the ingredients to become a world class player in his position in the coming years and at such a young age, he has managed to impress the biggest clubs in the world.
This is a statement signing from the Red Devils and they have no intention to stop with their summer transfer business any time soon.
