A cart-pusher lost his life on Thursday when a speeding driver lost control and rammed into him along the Dopemu area of Lagos State.
This is according to a statement by the spokesperson for the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, Adebayo Taofiq, on Thursday.
While narrating how the accident occurred, Taofiq noted that the driver of a commercial LT bus with number plate EPR 474 YJ was at high speed when he lost control of the vehicle and collided with a stationary construction crane and the cart-pusher.
He said, “A tragic accident occurred earlier today along Union Road by Cement Bus Stop, Dopemu, leading to the unfortunate death of a wheelbarrow pusher.
“The accident was caused by a commercial LT bus with registration number EPE 474 YJ, which lost control due to excessive speeding and collided with a construction crane positioned at the roadside.
“The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority officers were swiftly on the scene, coordinating emergency efforts and securing the area.”
He continued, “The impact of the crash led to the immediate fatality of a roadside wheelbarrow pusher, whose body was later handed over to security men from Afonja Police Station along with the deceased, the severely damaged LT bus was also transferred to the police for further examination.”
While condoling with the deceased family, Taofiq urged motorists to be safety conscious by adhering to speed limits.
“Our thoughts and condolences go out to the family of the deceased, and we urge motorists to always prioritise safety by adhering to speed limits and maintaining control of their vehicles to avoid preventable tragedies,” Taofiq concluded.
PUNCH Online reported on Monday that a yet-to-be-identified driver was arrested by LASTMA operatives after causing a pedestrian bodily injuries in the Mile 2 area of the state on Sunday.
Taofiq in a statement noted that the driver had sped through a busy section of the road leading to the collision with the pedestrian.
He added that operatives of the LASTMA who were at the scene of the accident swiftly rescued the victim to a nearby hospital in the area.
