Ruben Amorim endeared himself to Manchester United fans before even arriving at Old Trafford by beating Pep Guardiola’s Man City 4-1 in the Champions League at the Jose Alvalade Stadium.

Sporting Lisbon have enjoyed an incredible unbeaten start to the season, winning their first 10 league matches. That feat was topped tonight in Amorim’s final home match as they beat Man City as underdogs.

City have now suffered three consecutive defeats for the first time since 2018, but tonight they were schooled by Amorim’s Sporting, despite dominating phases of the first half and missing a penalty after the break.

Manchester United transfer target Viktor Gyokeres scored a hat-trick to take his season tally to 23. He missed a sitter in the first half and should have had four goals to his name on the night.

The evening began in a celebratory mood for the hosts, but it ended in celebration as they bid farewell to Amorim following a four-year spell in which he delivered two domestic titles.

After the memorable win over City, the Sporting players tossed Amorim up into the air several times before he left the pitch. It’s a glorious end to a glorious era for Sporting.

50,000 fans stayed behind to say goodbye to their manager, and it was only right that he got bumps from his players.

The fans broke into a spontaneous rendition of the Portuguese national anthem in attempt to make Amorim change his mind, but he will be starting work at United on November 11. The contracts have been signed for him to become head coach and Erik ten Hag’s successor.
