Ruben Amorim received a warm reception from the Sporting Lisbon crowd ahead of what could be his last match in charge before taking over at Manchester United.
The Portuguese manager is heavily linked with becoming Erik ten Hag’s successor at Old Trafford, with United in talks with his current employers about a move.
There is willingness to pay his release clause but it remains to be seen when he will be able to start his new job.
Amorim has brought success to Lisbon after guiding the club to their first league title in 19 years in 2021. He backed that up last season by winning the Primeira League for a second time.
One Sporting fan reacted to the news by bursting into tears on Portuguese TV.
Other fans gave him a warm welcome at the Jose Alvalade Stadium as they stood up as he walked towards the home dugout. The footage has been shared by Sport TV via X.
Sporting took on Nacional in the quarter-finals of the Taca de Liga Cup on Tuesday night. Amorim did not wave at the fans at half-time as he went straight down the tunnel as though it was business as usual.
Amorim reluctant to speak about his future after last Sporting Lisbon match
Photo by Gualter Fatia/Getty ImagesThe Sporting boss kept his cards close to his chest when asked about his imminent future, even though it feels like the worst kept secret in football at this stage.
He said (via The Mirror): “I was expecting that question and obviously I am not going to talk about my future. I am not going to speak about my future because no matter what I say I’d have to always talk about it. Since the first day, I said it was not worthy to ask about it and I am not going to make any comments about my future.”
Amorim will soon have to deal with the intense scrutiny that comes with managing the biggest club in the world.
