Captain James T. Kirk’s “phaser and communicator” prop used during the production of the original Star Trek TV series will be among the items from the show auctioned off at next month’s Infinity Festival.
The auction will precede a screening of Star Trek: The Motion Picture – The Director’s Edition at the Dolby Vine Screening Room. Producer David C. Fein spearheaded the 4K DolbyVision/DolbyAtmos version of director Robert Wise’s 1979 film and will deliver introductory remarks before the screening.
The event on November 9 will cap off the seventh edition of Infinity Festival, which opens November 6 and offers a blend of programming across technology, entertainment and design. An exhibition featuring 200 Star Trek items will also be open to attendees on November 7 and 8. Deadline is a presenting media sponsor of Infinity Festival.
William Shatner, who played Kirk, recorded a video for Julien’s Auctions, which is handling the sale of a range of items. In the video (watch it above), Shatner holds the long-lost communicator in his hand for the first time in more than 60 years.
Other items to be auctioned include the USS Enterprise Helm and Navigation Console from the original series and several costumes and props.
Prior to the screening, Mint Comedy CEO Daniel Tibbets will interview Fein about the new version of the film and the 1979 expansion of the TV franchise into the realm of theatrical film.
“Star Trek has always been a beacon for what’s possible when technology and human imagination work together to explore the unknown,” said Adam Newman, Chief Creative Officer of Infinity Festival. “This partnership with Julien’s Auctions brings that spirit to life by giving fans and technologists a chance to celebrate the innovation and wonder that has defined the franchise for decades.”
Julien’s Auctions will also partner with AI firm Wonder.pro on a series of Star Trek short videos to be showcased on social media platforms throughout the festival in various formats and alien languages, including Klingon.
The festival will feature speakers from Sony Imageworks, AGBO, Sega, Nvidia, Z by HP, ILM Immersive and other companies. Justin Marks and Rachel Kondo, creators of FX’s Emmy-winning Shōgun, are also slated to appear.
