The 2024 Creative Arts Emmys finished handing out trophies last night—the Primetime Emmys ceremony is coming up September 15—and Star Wars: Ahsoka took the prize for Fantasy/Sci-Fi Costumes, beating out a pair of Marvel shows (Loki, Echo) as well as the jumpsuits of Fallout and the vampire frills of What We Do in the Shadows. It’s not the first Emmy win for a Star Wars series, but it may be the most bittersweet, coming as a posthumous tribute to late costume designer Shawna Trpcic.

The Emmy was specifically for Ahsoka‘s season finale, “The Jedi, the Witch, and the Warlord,” which was also maybe, possibly the series finale (a second season has yet to be officially announced). The award was shared by Trpcic, assistant costume designer Elissa Alcala, and costume supervisor Devon Patterson. Ahsoka was also nominated for Special VFX, Fantasy/Sci-Fi Hairstyling, Prosthetic Make-up, and Sound Editing, though the first three ended up going to Shōgun and the final to The Bear.

Trpcic had previously been nominated for her work on The Mandalorian and The Book of Boba Fett; her death in October 2023 came not long after Ahsoka‘s first season wrapped on Disney+. In the still-active GoFundMe shared on behalf of her children, a biography paying tribute to Trpcic’s career and talents noted her string of credits on Joss Whedon projects (including feature film Cabin in the Woods and cult-beloved TV series Firefly), but especially her special affection for all things Star Wars:

“Shawna was most known for her enormous contributions to Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni’s shows in the Star Wars Universe. She designed multiple seasons of The Mandalorian, as well as The Book of Boba Fett and most recently Ahsoka, which earned her the best notices of her career. She loved collaborating with Jon and Dave, who were the dream team for her, along with working with the actors and with her huge costume design team. To house all of her creations, Lucasfilm established a warehouse that held thousands of her costumes from all the shows … she won the Costume Designers Guild Award for Excellence in Sci-Fi/Fantasy Television for The Book of Boba Fett. A staple at every Star Wars Celebration, Shawna loved interacting with the fans and would often judge the cosplay competitions.” The tribute also notes that she “was always into science fiction and comic books.”

The official Ahsoka X account paid tribute to the show’s Emmy win:
