EXCLUSIVE: Stereophonic, David Adjmi’s acclaimed Tony Award-winning play about a Fleetwood Mac-like ’70s rock band, has recouped its Broadway investment and will begin a West End engagement and national U.S. tour later this year, producers said today.
The twice-extended Broadway production is currently playing its final week at the Golden Theatre, where it will end its run Sunday, January 12, after 305 performances. The play made Tony history last spring by becoming Broadway’s most nominated play ever, going on to win five of its 13 nominations: Best Play, Best Director ( Daniel Aukin), Best Featured Actor (Will Brill), Best Scenic Design (David Zinn) and Best Sound Design (Ryan Rumery).
The West End engagement will begin in May 2025 at London’s Duke of York’s Theatre, and a U.S. national tour will launch in Seattle this October. Casting for the productions has not been announced.
The Broadway staging currently stars Benjamin Anthony Anderson, Will Brill, Andrew Butler, Amy Forsyth, Rebecca Naomi Jones and Chris Stack.
Stereophonic – which is set entirely in a West Coast recording studio circa 1976 as an (unnamed) band records what will be its masterpiece while all but imploding from toxic personal entanglements and brink-of-stardom disputes – had its world premiere Off Broadway at Playwrights Horizons in the fall 2023.
Originally scheduled for a limited 14-week-only Broadway engagement, the production was extended twice and has played to sold-out or near sold-out houses since its opening night on April 19, 2024. (Previews began April 2, 2024.) Last week, the production grossed $965,174, and, along with Oh, Mary!, it has continually been among the highest grossing non-musical plays of the Broadway season.
The Broadway production’s capitalization has been reported as up to $4.8 million.
Produced on Broadway by Sue Wagner, John Johnson, Seaview, Sonia Friedman Productions, Linden Productions, and Ashley Melone & Nick Mills, the West End production will be produced by Sonia Friedman Productions, Sue Wagner, John Johnson, Seaview, Linden Productions and Ashley Melone & Nick Mills.
The national U.S. tour will officially launch at the Paramount Theatre in Seattle as part of the Broadway at the Paramount/STG 2025-2026 season. Additional cities, dates, and ticket on sale dates will be announced soon. The tour will be produced by Sue Wagner, John Johnson, Seaview, Sonia Friedman Productions, Linden Productions, and Ashley Melone & Nick Mills.
Recently, Concord Theatricals secured exclusive worldwide secondary English-language stage licensing rights for its Samuel French imprint. The original cast recording was released digitally through Sony Masterworks Broadway on May 10, 2024, with a physical CD released on June 14, 2024.
