Earlier today, Barcelona announced that the club’s economic vice president, Eduard Romeu, had resigned from his position, with club president Joan Laporta accepting it.

Following the announcement, both Romeu and Laporta, along with several other Barcelona board members, appeared in front of the media just a while ago, where the former explained his decision to leave.

Laporta expresses gratitude to Romeu

Romeu had been one of Laporta’s trusted lieutenants in his ongoing tenure as Barcelona president, helping the club tackle the financial issues they are facing. As such, the club president took today’s occasion to thank Romeu for his services, saying:

“I am very grateful for your work, for your ability and your human qualities. And I want to make it very clear that you have been a key person in rescuing the club financially. You have done a great job on the viability plan.”

Opening up on how the talk of Romeu’s resignation went about, Laporta added: “He has the Barça feeling inside him and he shows it whenever he makes an appearance. When he told me about his decision he told me to make it easy for him. I respected him, and he wants to remain linked to the Club’s foundation and we are delighted.”

Signing off, Laporta admitted that he would have preferred Romeu to continue while insisting that this will always remain his project and Barça his home.

“The bottom line is this, we have to communicate this news. We would have been delighted if he had not had to take this decision. But it is a necessity that he has, we accept the resignation.

“We are happy for the great work he has done. He has been key in the economic work of the club and we will continue to follow his advice. He leaves an economic area ready to continue his work. He will continue to be linked to the club. Barça is still your home, this is still your project.”
