Manchester United have been linked with Bayern Munich veteran Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting in recent weeks – much to supporters’ dismay.
The 34-year-old is out-of-favour at the Allianz due to Bayern’s scintillating options in attack. As well as that, Harry Kane has continued his prolific goalscoring form – that we’d grown so accustomed to seeing in England – in Germany.
As was the situation this time last year, United fans have entered the window with low expectations with reports suggesting the club will be looking solely at the loan market this month. Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s 25% stake is still in the process of being ratified by the Premier League so his hands are tied when it comes to reinforcing Erik ten Hag’s squad.
A forward is believed to be the position most in need of strengthening after a tumultuous start to the campaign; the Reds have scored the lowest amount of goals (24) of any club in the top 14 of the Premier League table.
United could face rejection in pursuit of striker
As such, Choupo-Moting was mooted as a potential stop-gap signing to provide some form of depth to the likes of Rasmus Hojlund, Marcus Rashford and the currently injured Anthony Martial, however, he is ‘leaning towards’ staying in Germany, as per Sky Sports.
Thomas Tuchel is also unwilling to sanction mid-season departures after an injury-plagued few months has seen his squad options lessen significantly.
