Bruno Genésio’s LOSC once again dominated a Madrid club in the Champions League.
LOSC continues its hunt for Madrid clubs. After Real Madrid, it was Atlético who fell against the Mastiffs. A prestigious success that the Northerners achieved at the Metropolitano stadium and with a little help from the referee (3-1).
A penalty fell from the sky
Against the Colchoneros, the Northerners did not deliver the match of the year. Far from it. Their victory looks like a hold-up. And not a small hold-up. Not only did they insure it against the run of play, but they also took advantage of a monumental refereeing error. At 74e minute, a penalty dropped from the sky that was offered to them. Of course, Jonathan David’s 3-1 goal at the end of regulation time helps to qualify this feeling of robbery.
Mr Guida, the man in black, pointed out the small white dot in the box, sanctioning Koke for a micro-fault. However, the most obvious irregularity that there was to whistle about the action in question is the hand of Benjamin André. To everyone’s amazement, the visitors therefore inherited a penalty and Jonathan David did not hesitate to convert it. He put it full axis and in force.

This goal for Lille arrived a quarter of an hour after the equalizer. Edon Zhegrova revived his team with a magnificent curling shot at the edge of the area. It was only the second opportunity of the match for LOSC (64th). The first had already been signed from Kosovar in the first period.
Atlético did not seize their chance
Lille therefore turned the tide, even though it should never have remained at 0-1. After Julian Alvarez opened the scoring by taking advantage of a missed pass from Ousmane Touré, Atlético had several attempts to double the lead but failed to take advantage. Norwegian Sorloth twice missed the target in a very advantageous position, while Uruguayan defender Gimenez saw Lucas Chevalier relax on one of his headers.
The French goalkeeper also pulled out all the stops during the second act of the match. At the 89ehe diverted a low shot from Lino for a corner. And that was just before Alexsandro put his foot in opposition to a dangerous strike from Giuliano Simeone. It was the last scare on the Lille goals. A few moments later, and after good work from the young Sahrawi on the side, David took advantage of a deflection in the area to secure the double and seal the fate of the match. For the first time in 3 years, Atlético fell at home in C1 and it was LOSC who achieved this incredible performance.
Genesio, heartthrob of the great coaches
This historic victory obviously bears the signature of Bruno Genésio. Before this Wednesday’s meeting, he was one of three coaches to have beaten Ancelotti and Guardiola and Mourinho behind them. He has therefore just added another great technician to his hunt, namely Diego Simeone. Too bad Jurgen Klopp is retired, otherwise he would have tried to bring him down too.
