The Sudanese army has captured the central city of Wad Madani, marking a milestone in its ongoing war against the Rapid Support Forces.

The nearly two-year conflict has devastated the nation, causing widespread displacement and famine.

Wad Madani, the capital of Gezira state, is strategically located 87 miles south of Khartoum. It serves as a vital crossroads, connecting major supply routes across several states.

Its capture represents one of the army’s most critical victories in the war, according to BBC on Sunday.

Social media footage showed crowds celebrating in the streets as soldiers entered the city.

RSF leader General Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, also known as Hemedti, acknowledged the loss in an audio message.

He blamed the defeat on the army’s air superiority and the use of Iranian-made drones.

Despite his frustration, Hemedti vowed to continue fighting, declaring his willingness to wage war for decades if necessary.

The conflict began in April 2023, pitting the RSF against the Sudanese army. While the RSF controls most of the western Darfur region and parts of the south, the army dominates the north, east, and sections of Khartoum.

The war has claimed tens of thousands of lives and forced nine million people to flee their homes. Humanitarian agencies report that nearly half the population—24.6 million people—are in urgent need of food aid.

Earlier this month, the United States imposed sanctions on Hemedti, accusing the RSF of committing genocide and systemic atrocities against civilians.
