Sunderland confirm derby against Newcastle United women will be at Stadium of Light

It is going to be Sunderland v Newcastle United at the Stadium of Light, following an announcement on Tuesday morning.

Nine months after Newcastle United had that 3-0 stroll in the FA Cup, it is going to be the NUFC women getting their chance.

This morning seeing Sunderland announce (see below) that four of their women’s team matches will be played at the main stadium.

With Sunderland v Newcastle to be a 2pm kick-off on Sunday 13 October 2024.

Sunderland official announcement on women’s team – 6 August 2024:

‘SAFC Women will host Newcastle United, Durham, Birmingham and Sheffield United at the Stadium of Light during the 2024-25 season.

The Lasses’ first Barclays Women’s Championship game at the stadium will come against Wear-Tyne rivals Newcastle on Sunday 13 October.

The second instalment will see Mel Reay’s side take on Birmingham in SR5 on Sunday 2 February, with the River Wear Derby against Durham to take place on Sunday 2 March.

The Black Cats host Sheffield United on Sunday 4 May, one day after Sunderland men’s first team take on Queens Park Rangers, with both Red & White sides concluding their regular season on that weekend.

All league fixtures will take place on Sundays at 2pm.

Details regarding ticketing for these fixtures will be available in due course.’

On Monday 22 July 2024, Newcastle United Women found out their fixtures for the upcoming 2024/25 season.

It will be interesting to see how many matches the Newcastle United Women will play at St James’ Park next season and what kind of crowds they get, especially if going for promotion to the top tier.

You would imagine for sure that the third last home fixture will be played at St James’ Park, Newcastle v Sunderland, and potentially the first ever SJP sold out match for the women’s team?

Of course, interesting first of all to see what kind of attendance there will be for that first women’s derny, Sunderland v Newcastle United, in October.
