The National Chairman of the Police Community Relations Committee, Ibrahim Olaniyan, has called on Nigerians to support officers of the Nigeria Police Force to enhance security across the country.

According to him, criticising the police will not solve the nation’s security challenges.

Olaniyan made this appeal at the PCRC opening-year ceremony held in Abuja on Thursday.

“Criticising the police from the fence cannot solve our security challenges, but a collective community resolve to address them can go a long way in reducing insecurity in Nigeria.

“PCRC is calling for all hands to be on deck in this regard,” he stated.

The National Chairman further revealed that the committee had established the Diaspora PCRC to counter negative narratives about Nigeria and the Nigeria Police Force.

“Working with the Diaspora Commission, we established the Diaspora PCRC to check the excesses and unguarded criticisms of Nigeria and the Nigeria Police by our brothers and sisters abroad. It is yielding positive results,” he said.

Olaniyan reaffirmed the committee’s commitment to strengthening its service to the nation and humanity.

“The PCRC is making an avowed commitment to triple our efforts in serving the nation and humanity. We will draw from experiences and lessons learned over the past 40 years to deepen collaboration with stakeholders and support the police and other security agencies in addressing community and national security challenges.”

“We have made it clear that the years of a docile and rudderless PCRC are over. We have demonstrated this by expanding our partnerships and reaching out to communities and remote villages to create Unit PCRCs for inclusive police-community collaboration,” he added.

Speaking on the committee’s initiatives, Olaniyan revealed that 17 police orphans had been awarded university scholarships through the committee’s efforts.

“We initiated 17 university scholarships for police orphans through one of our patrons, Apostle Chibuzor Chinyere of the Apostolic Fire Ministry, Port Harcourt. Another of our National Patrons being inducted today, Evangelist Happiness Etuk, has more than 20 police children between the ages of 10 and 15 years on his TrisoNet Metaverse Community scholarship,” he disclosed.

The Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, urged Nigerians to join the PCRC and assist the police with vital information to enhance security.

Represented by Assistant Inspector General of Police Ben Igweh, Egbetokun said, “We deeply value the PCRC, the Nigerian people, and our communities. This is why the IGP is encouraging the PCRC to expand its reach across the country.

“Every hamlet and every community should have PCRC members so that we can gather critical information that will help ensure the safety and security of Nigerians. This is the vision of the Inspector General, and we are committed to achieving it.”
