Former AEW World Champion Swerve Strickland says WWE inquired about his availability.
Swerve Strickland previously had a prominent run in WWE, especially in NXT, but he was released in a wave of cuts in November 2021. He then signed with AEW and debuted at AEW Revolution 2022. During his time with AEW, Strickland has held the AEW World Tag Team Championship, and he won the AEW World Championship earlier in 2024.
Speaking on The Breakfast Club, Strickland was asked whether WWE attempted to re-sign him, and he said that they asked about his availability. (H/t Jeremy Lambert of Fightful for the transcription.
“Yeah. It wasn’t like the words ‘re-sign.’ They ‘asked about my availability.’ They never contacted me,” Swerve Strickland said. “They contacted my representation. I’m at a stage now where I enjoy the fact that I don’t have that direct contact. When you are progressing and getting higher and you’re in rooms with people like [Charlamagne Tha God], you have to kind of keep space in between these types of conversations. You can check my phone. It’s never been there. I never had direct contact. I want to keep that little space. Communication has been reached out.”
Strickland did not specify when WWE contacted his representation, so the timeframe is unclear.
